A stubborn partnership in the second innings saved Minor Counties from defeat at the hands of the Australians at Kennington Oval, the game ending in a draw.® The Australian second wicketkeeper, Barnett, showed plenty of vigour for 80 in a bright partnership with Woodfull (75 not out) that produced 107. Woodfull declared with eight down for 370, in reply to Minor Counties’ score of 182, which was reduced by one rim from the cabled total, 183, owing to the discovery of an extra that should not have been included. Minor Counties started badly, but managed to ward off defeat, losing six wickets for 137, including one wicket to Ponsford for no runs.
Barnett, driving vigorously, reached 50 in 85 minutes and, with Woodfull, added 107 before he was bowled. Woodfull’s 50 occupied 110> minutes. He declared when Grimmett’s cheerful exhibition ended. The innings lasted 300 minutes. Minor Counties started the second knock at 3.35 p.m. Wall bowled Harbord in his second over; then Grimmett claimed three wickets in quick succession, and with four for 45 the Australians had hopes of forcing a win, but Rutter stayed 95 minutes for 20, while Fisher also played stubbornly, ensuring a draw. In the match at Scarborough, Players in the first innings lost eight for 363 and declared, and Gentlemen in the first innings lost eight for 203. At Folkestone, in the other match, Gentlemen in the first innings made 258 (Powell 62; Freeman five for 69).
