WOMEN’S HOCKEY TOURNEY

FIRST GAMES AT CHRISTCHURCH. SEVENTEEN TEAMS TAKING PART. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Seventeen women’s hockey teams from all parts of the Dominion are taking part in the annual women’s tournament, which opened on Saturday afternoon. There are twelve teams from the South Island and five from the North Island. Before the tournament began the teams paraded and marched past the Mayor, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., and the spectators, the whole making a colourful and attractive display with the banners and distinctive uniforms of the teams. After the march past the teams lined up before the Mayor, who briefly welcomed the visitors and wished them a successful tourney and an enjoyable week at Christchurch. Eight matches were played on Saturday. Play in the tourney is not by the knock-out method, but every team will meet every other team. Following are results of the games:— Otago 3 beat Canterbury B 1. Canterbury A 4 beat Alcitio 1. Eastern Southland 6 beat Bush 0. Ruahine 4 beat West Coast 0. Central Otago 3 beat Wairarapa 2. Southland 5 beat North Otago 2. Marlborough 3 beat Wellington 2.
