PALMER OUTPOINTS NICOL

CHAMPIONS OF THEIR COUNTRIES. BOXING MATCH AT INVERCARGILL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last ight. Before a crowd of over 2000 Ambrose Palmer (Australia) and Ray Nicol (Southland) fought a boxing match last night, Palmer winning on points. Both are champions of their countries. Palmer scaled 12.2 and Nicol 12.9. As in his fight with Strickland, Palmer had a fairly easy victory, his pace and cleverness giving him a decided advantage over the New Zealander, who relied on boring tactics and in-fighting to wear his opponent down. Palmer’s ringcraft was too much for Nicol in these exchanges, however, and generally the visitor emerged with the honours. It was a hard, fast fight all through, with Nicol standing up to punishment in great style. He was severely punished in the middle and later rounds, and at the finish he, had his right eye closed. Nicol’s weight and strength enabled him to rush Palmer to the ropes, but beyond that he had no advantage whatever. Palmer’s weak left eyebrow was opened in the fifth, not as the result of a punch but in a scuffle of heads and arms. Palmer tried to knock out Nicol in the seventh round, but found the New Zealander too fit and rugged. Palmer injured. his. left hand and will not now meet Campbell at Timaru on Wednesday.
