NIGHT TRAIN TO AUCKLAND
ANNIVERSARY OF INAUGURATION.
SUCCESS ATTENDS THE VENTURE. Gratifying success has attended the through night train service between New Plymouth and Auckland, which was introduced a year ago to-day. The train has been well patronised, and on occasions, especially during holiday periods, the traffic has been so heavy that separate trains have been run along the whole route instead of linking up with Main Trunk expresses at Taumarunui.
The New Plymouth section of the expresses usually comprises a carriage containing both sleeping and first-class accommodation, one with first and secondclass accommodation, a second-class car and a van. When separate trains are run, two additional second-class cars are provided. Until the introduction of the new type of “composite” cats toward the end of July, there were generally a sleeping, car, one first-ctass and two second-class carriages and a van. The composite vehicles have proved valuable in reducing the haulage load, for it had been found that a complete sleeping car was seldom required. The innovation also has proved popular with travellers, for the vehicles have beexi reconstructed and renovated.
