NEW GOLF LINKS PROPOSED
WESTOWN PROPERTY SUGGESTED.
PLANS FOR NINE-HOLE COURSE. Should sufficient support be forthcoming during the next fortnight regotiations will be completed to establish a nine-hole golf links, at Westown. Between 30 and 40 players have signified their intention of‘ supporting the proposal, and if the membership can be increased to 70 negotiations will be completed immediately. The links, which are situated within five or six minutes of the David Street tram terminus, will provide facilities for Westown, Frankley Road and Frankleigh Park residents. Casual and permanent players will'be provided for. The proposal was first mooted two or three years ago but lack of an adequate playing area. prevented any definite action being taken. Recently it was learned that an area of 50 acres, situated on the corner of Tukapo Street and Waimea Road, the property of Mr. C. Clarke, borough engineer,, was available, and steps were immediately taken to secure the use of the land. The country at the front of the property is flat, while further back it is of an undulating nature. A portion of the section, approximately 20 acres, is at present under the plough and will be soon in grass before the end of the month. Should negotiations be completed this area will receive special treatment and should produce fine fairways. The remaining - portion of the proposed links is in good pasture and requires little work to bring it into playing condition. A plan of the proposed links prepared by Mr. Clark provides for a variety of holes and natural fairways. Five of the greens will be on the new ploughing and will be specially prepared, while the others will be formed on the present turf, which is stated to be in excellent' order. “I think the property lends itself admirably for a good nine-hole course,” said Mr. P. Grey, who inspected the property yesterday. But for a few minor alterations he confirmed Mr. Clarke's layout of the greens. There was the possibility of establishing four good holes on the flat, while five that could be termed “sporty” holes could be made on the rough. There was every possibiity of making a really fine nine-hole course at a very small cost. The land was at present in a rough state but stocked with sheep would quickly become good golfing country, said Mr. Grey.
