HEAVY RAILWAY TRAFFIC
MANY PEOPLE TRAVELLING. POSITION AT NEW PLYMOUTH. School holidays, visiting football teams and a general increase in the passenger traffic has contributed to a particularly busy time at the New Plymouth railway station. On both the Wellington and Auckland expresses a large number of passengers travelled last week, and indications are that the traffic will be heavy next week. The passenger revenue was exceptionally high last week, when many of those travelling were boarders from the New Plymouth Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools. During the first four days of the week 607 people' left New Plymouth. When the Auckland-New Plymouth express left Taumarunui yesterday morning there were 126 passengers aboard, and when the express left Stratford there remained 91. Of these 85 alighted at New Plymouth. A party of 40 boys from the Auckland Grammar School and the Whangarei High School, who will compete in a triangular Rugby contest with the New Plymouth Boys’ High School; were among the passengers. They will return north on Wednesday. Last Night approximately 100 passengers left New Plymouth by the Auckland express for Auckland or intermediate stations, an additional carriage being required. The ski championship meeting at Tongariro National Park has attracted several Taranaki entries and on Wednesday a party of 21 Taranaki Alpine Club members will travel by the Auckland express as far as Taumarunui, where a special train will await them to take them to their destination. The special train will leave Taumarunui at 1.25 a.m., arriving at National Park at 3.54 a.m. The party will return home by train on Sunday, September 2. A special train will rim from the Park to Taumarunui to connect with the AucklandNew Plymouth express on the retjum journey.
The Taranaki Rugby representative team will commence its tour on Friday, while the Taranaki colts’ team will leave on a northern tour the following Friday, August 31. The former team will visit Wellington, Palmerston North and Napier It will return to New Plymouth on Monday, September 3. The colts will play at Te Kuiti, Tauranga and Paeroa, returning to New Plymouth on Monday, September 10.
