CHILD BURNED 70 DEATH
SWIFT TOKOMARU BAY FIRE HOME OF MINISTER DESTROYED. FATHER ATTEMPTS TO SAVE BABY. DRIVEN BACK BY FIERCE FLAMES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Aug. 17. Early this morning the residence of the Anglican Maori minister at Tokornaru Bay, the Rev. R. Rangiaho, was destroyed by fire, and the minister’s only child, aged two months, was burned to death. The child was sleeping alone in a cot in the sitting-room, where a candle had been left alight. It is believed the wind blew the curtains against the candle. When the minister and his wife were awakened the front room was ablaze, and the minister was severely burned in endeavouring to reach the child. The flames drove him back, and the whole building, containing five rooms, was destroyed within ten minutes The minister and his wife, and his aged father, escaped through a window.
The remains of the child could not be found this morning.
