SUCCESSFUL YEAR’S WORK

HAWERA AERO CLUB MEETING. PRESIDENT'S REPORT ON YEAR. “I feel that; the club is to be congratulated on the healthy stale of its finances,” said Dr. W. F. Buist, president, at the annual meeting of the Hawera Aero Club last night. “The accumulated fund to-day stands at £7560 5s Id, and during the year, without limiting the activities of the club and after providing for depreciation, a surplus of £l7 5s is shown.” During the greater part of the year, he continued, the attention of the committee had been directed towards acquiring an aerodrome large enough to accommodate modern aircraft. The cost of land in the vicinity of Hawera made the purchase of a suitable area prohibitive at the moment. Members would agree that the committee’s policy in declining to pay high prices for land was sound, and it was proposed to reserve the accumulated fund of the club until such time as a suitable property offered. A great deal of flying had been done by members. Seven pilots now flew regularly. Contrary to the opinion of a lot of “experts,” the Faith in Australia, when visiting Hawera this year, was able to land and take off on the aerodrome without difficulty. Flying in New Zealand sustained a severe loss in the death some months ago of Mr. E. R. Boucher, captain of the Auckland Aero Club, who was killed in an accident at Wellington. The Hawera club was represented at the funeral by the club captain, Mr. Brian Haybittle. In February one of the club members, Mr. E. Harvey, in company with Miss Trevor Hunter, made the first one-day flight from the North Cape to the Bluff. The club had the pleasure of co-operat-ing with the Eltham Jubilee in connection with the jubilee celebrations, and a good deal of flying was done at Eltham. The Hawera club was a member of the Western Federated (N. 1.0 Flying Club, which controlled flying on the West Coast. The federation had functioned happily and a great deal of very good work was done. “The thanks of the club,” concluded Dr. Buist, “are due to Flying Officer lan Keith, who has discharged his duties to our satisfaction.”
