MAY LOSE ONE GRADE
PRIMARY SCHOOL AT FITZROY. DECREASE IN ATTENDANCE. A serious falling-off in the attendance was reported in the report of the headmaster (Mr. G. A. Lyall) to the Fitzroy School committee last night. In a brief discussion which followed the headmaster said it appeared the school would lose its grade 7 status next year. The average attendance for the month ended July 25 was 426.4, the headmaster reported, this including an “exc6pted" week in which' the school attendance failed to reach three-quarters of the school roll. The present rell number was 489. Measles and, to a less extent, influenza were the causes of the serious falling-off in the attendance. The chairman (Mr. J. D. Nott) remarked that the attendance, though it could not be helped, was disappointing. “It is disastrous,” said the headmaster. “It seems as if the school will lose its grade 7 status this year. This will mean the loss of a teacher and the loss of capitation to the school committee. The additions to the assembly ground at the infant school had proved a boon during the recent wet weather, the headmaster's report- proceeded. Seventy pupils were being provided with a cup of warm milk daily. It was decided to erect a horizontal ladder in the infant school ground. Messrs R. J. Kibby and S. J. Quickfall were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. It was decided to grant the Municipal Band a guinea, the committee recognising the 'band’s services to the school in the past. There were also present at the meeting Messrs C. R. Cook, M. J. Kibby, S. D. Kibby, R. H. Milne, A. W. H. Nixon, M. J. O'Donnell, S. J. Quickfall and C. A. Voullaire.
