FORGED BANK NOTES
WELLINGTON DISCOVERY. DIFFERENCES FROM GENUINE. Details of a number of forged £1 notes, which were presented in Wellington on Monday, have been received by the Auckland branch of the National Bank of New Zealand. The notes are drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand and are dateff August 1, 1930. The sixfigure numbers of those so far presented all commenced with H 874 or H 875.
The bank states that the forgeries are not good. The signatures are illegible, the printing is bad. .The following other points are very noticeable:—The series letter “H ’ is of thing formation instead of heavy type; the letters of the overprinted “one” in brown are not as thick as in those of the genuine note, and have a distinct white outline; the back-ground of the words “one pound” appears only as a series of blurs; the name of the bank above the right-hand signature occupies a much larger space than on the genuine, and the word “for” is omitted; the letter “p” before “manager” is shown as a capital “P”; the medallions at each end of the notes differ considerably from those of the genuine notes. So far the forgeries have been reported only from Wellington.
