DISTRESSED FAMILY HELPED

HAWERA PEOPLE’S GOOD EFFORT.

OVER £2O RAISED BY EVENING.

Once again the spirit of charity that lies so strongly in Hawera folk and which was brought out so strikingly in the clothes drive conducted recently, made itself apparent on Wednesday night, when there was an attendance of between 200 and 300 at a social held to raise money to help the Bryant family. Mr. H. A. Bryant, who was a council, employee, has spent most of the time since October in the Hawera hospital, and for several weeks an adult daughter has also been in hospital. It is only a fortnight since the death of Alexander (“Micky”), aged 17 years, removed the only remaining breadwinner, leaving Mrs. Bryant with six young children to care for.

It was at this stage that certain organisations in which Mr. Bryant is interested decided to take a hand and raise money to help friends in need. The Hawera Poultry Club and Minorca Club and the Taranaki Egg-laying Competition Society were the principal organisers and later they were assisted by the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Wills’ orchestra, which abandoned arrangements of its own and lent its weight to the combined effort. Everyone has helped with' this gesture of Christianity in a practical fashion. The railway social committee gave up its usual night, Wills’ orchestra gave services free, there was no charge for St. Joseph’s Hall, the Opera House management and the Press assisted with the advertising, and there were numerous donors of cash and goods, foodstuffs for supper and prizes for the euchre and novelty dances. The evening was a great success. Euchre, controlled by Mr. and Miss Bartlett, occupied 20 tables, and prizes were won as follows: Ladies, Mrs. Donald 1, Mrs. Dymond 2, Mrs. Mcßeth consolation; men, Mr. Pritchard 1, Mr. West 2, Mr. Robertson consolation. For the dance Messrs. G. C. Harding and G. Gaylard were masters of ceremony. Messrs. Wilson and Moore were doorkeepers. A committee of ladies served supper. Novelty dances were won by Miss Robbins and Mr. C. Jones (Monte Carlo), Miss A. Cousins and Mr. Flood (spot valeta) and Miss S. O’Brien and Mr. Robertson (Monte Carlo foxtrot).
