FARMERS’ UNION FIGURES
WERE THEY ACCURATE? COMMMENT BY N.D.A. CHAIRMAN. Referring to the efforts made by the Farmers’ Union to induce the Government to come to the rescue of the dairy industry, Mr. A. Morton, chairman of the N.D.A. conference, said at New Plymouth yesterday that he thought one step taken by the union had gone further than was wise. He referred to the publication of an article in the journal published by the union. In that, it was said that the executive had approved of the policy speech of the president, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., and therefore it must be assumed that the speech expressed the views of the union. In his speech Mr. Polson had referred to the pay-out of the Midhirst Dairy Co. as being 8.773 d per lb for the season 1932-33 and 7d for 1933-34. Inquiry had shown that for the 1932-33 season 10.06 d per lb had been paid, while for the past season it was probable that 8.58 d for butter-fat and 2.46 d for casein would be paid, or a total of ll.OGd. It would be seen therefore that the payout would be rather better than last year.
Mr. Mortoiji said he thought that statements and figures given publicity in aid of the dairyj industry should be very carefully checked. Otherwise they were likely to reflect upon those they were intended to assist.
