Two men, Andrew Dasanini, aged 30, and Pietro Bendotti, aged 28, were asphyxiated by gas fumes in the Sons of Gwalia mine, 160 miles north of Kalgoorlie. A third man was gassed in an heroic attempt to rescue the men. He was hauled to the surface and sent to hospital in a delirious condition.
