LEAD 'ON FIRST INNINGS BETTER BATTING BY WALL GENTLEMEN 33 FOR ONE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 1.30 a.m. London, June 18. Australia in reply to the first innings score of 177 bj Gentlemen of England compiled 230. In the second innings Gentlemen at lunch to-day had made 33 at a cost of one wicket. The hottest day of the tour greeted the Australians, who before passing Gentlemen’s score lost Chipperfield, who in playing forward was badly beaten and bowled by Read. Barnett was out in attempting to hit Holmes. ♦ Grimmett and Ebeling figured in a solid stand before Brown’s leg break beat Ebeling, who was caught, at the wicket. Grimmett and Wall raised 200 in 175 minutes. Wall later batted exceptionally well. The Australians in the last three innings have made progressively the lowest scores of the tour. The innings occupied 190 minutes. Brown bowled well, improving his test prospects. Gentlemen reopened at 12.30. Dawson was clean bowled by Wall in Wall’s second over. The scores are:— GENTLEMEN.
