“ROOSEVELT RISK” POLICIES

SPECULATION ON LARGE SCALE. CESSATION OF’ THE PRESIDENCY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, June 5. Large-scale London insurance speculation on President Roosevelt’s future has been stopped at the request of the British Foreign Office, says the Daily Mail. Last week. Lloyds received considerable demands for policies providing cover on the possibility of Mr. Roosevelt ceasing to be President, causing grave concern at Washington, from where instructions were telegraphed to Mr. R. W. Bingham. American Ambassador at London, to make immediate representations to the British Government. As a result Sir John Simon, Foreign Secretary, sent a letter to Lloyd’s committee requesting that, as a matter of diplomatic courtesy to a friendly Power, members should discontinue such business. The committee met and decided to put members on their honour not to deal in “Roosevelt risks.”
