EASTON IN SECOND PLACE HOT FAVOURITE DEFEATED COLOMBO RUNS ONLY THIRD WORLD’S GREATEST RACE By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 1.43 a.m, London, June 6. The English Derby, the world’s most famous classic race, was run at Epsom Downs to-day in the presence of a vast concourse of people. The prize was £8852. The results are:— WINDSOR LAD, Maharajah of Rajpipia’s bay colt, 9.0 (C. Smirke) 1 EASTON, Lord Woolavington’s brown colt, 9.0 (Gordon Richards) 2 COLOMBO, Lord Glanely’s bay colt, 9.0 (Johnstone) ... 3 Colombo, who has an outstanding record, was considered unbeatable by many and had ruled a hot favourite for some time. The conditions of the race are: A sweepstake of £lOO each, with £3OOO added; second horse to receive 10 per cent, and third horse 5 per cent, of the whole stakes. Breeder of the winner to receive £5OO out of the stakes. For entire colts foaled in 1931. Weight 9.0. About one mile and a-half. Lord Glanely paid £6OOO for a halfshare in an Irish sweep ticket on Colombo drawn by a furnace worker.
