LOSS ON SPECIAL TRAIN

ELTHAM-TUKAPA MATCH. METHOD OF MEETING DEFICIT. For the Eltham-Tukapa Rugby match, played as a special attraction during the Eltham jubilee week, a special train was run under a guarantee of £24, equivalent to 8) fares from New Plymouth to Eltham. The train was very poorly patronised, resulting in the guarantee not being reached by £lB 14s Bd. Mr. J. McLeod state! that at Wednesday night’s meeting of the Rugby union that he had been approached by Eltham residents with a view to arranging a special train and had fallen in with the idea. After consulting the two clubs concerned he had guaranteed the train, but unfortunately the weather was against it. Comment had been made at Eltham that the Tukapa tlub had not used the train, but he pointed out that the club had made a contract for the season’s transport. In view of the (act that the jubilee attraction had resulted in a “gate” of £62 at Eltham, he suggested the union should pay £8 14s 8d out of its general account and that the balance of £lO should be taken out of the gate. The proposal that was agreed to, though two or three of the members took exception to any guarantee being given for trains, Mr. W. D. Young holding that the Railway Department itself should be prepared to take the risk. Under the proposed division all the clubs would have to bear a portion of the loss. ' ,
