WONDER VIEW JERSEYS

OPPORTUNITY FOR BUYERS. Another fine opportunity of buying selected Jersey stock has been made available by Mr. Len Hale, Barrett Road, who is offering 13 females -nd three rising two-year-old bulls. The cows are excellent breeding cows, sound and all from approved butter-fat strains, at present carrying calves to the young imported sire Standard Oxford Lad. The progeny of Standard’s Oxford Lad are splendid types with great capacity and promise to do well as producers. This bull is by Standard of Oaklands( referred to above, and who it will be noted is sire of the 1933 “Bull and Progeny” winner, Wonderful Standard. Standard’s Oxford Lad is from Madcap June, a daughter of the successful Blonde’s Golden Oxford bull, Le Rondin Oxford' Lad, while her dam is by Beatall, a highly successful son of Oxford You’ll Do, a Gold Medal R.O.M. sire and winner of the “Bull and Progeny” prize over Jersey in 1911. Madcap June is therefore doubly descended from Oxford You’ll Do. TWO BROOKLEY HEIFERS BOTH COMMAND ATTENTION. This year buyers will be given the opportunity of bidding on only two representatives of Mr. W. Johnson’s wellknown Brookley stud at Ngaere and the fact that they are both almost perfect specimens of the Jersey breed should stimulate keen bidding for these heifers. Both are two-year-olds and are closely related in pedigree. The first, Brooklfey Betty (Lot 13) is a daughter of Brookley Tessie C.O.R. 382.5 in 328 days as a second calver. As Tessie appears again 'as a grand dam of the second offering, Brookley Carleta, it may be interesting to note that she is by Willowbank Baronet, a double grandson of Soumise Majesty, out of Willowbahk Testor 5901 b fat in 325 days, from the famous Fern family whose records include 714, 621 and 5521 b fat. Nga Tawa Reform sired both offerings. He is a particularly fine bull with a good show record. Six tested cows in his pedigree have averaged 5221 b fat. He is line-bred to the Royal champion sire Miro Meadows Maori Boy. Here then, are a couple of well grown heifers showing heavily in calf, bred from high producers and show champions. THE HOPELANDS OFFERING SIX VERY CLASSY HEIFERS. The Hopelands Stud at Warea, owned by Mr. C. Wells, is represented by six very choice two-year in-calf heifers that would grace any Jersey stud. They show plenty of size and Jersey type. Five of them, including the first four to be submitted at the sale, are by the senior herd sire Golden Maple, a bull with a wonderful constitution and one that would hold his own in any show ring. He has remarkably strong butter-fat backing as well as championship honours on both sides, as his sire Marshlands Masterpiece has no fewer than 22 championships and reserves to his credit, as veil as having produced 11 c.o.r. daughters, one of which, Rexcourt Lady Magnet, has a record of 880.191 b fat. His dam, Reed Park’s Guenon Sunbeam, has also championships as well as two c.o.r. daughters to her credit. Indeed, for many generations his female ancestors have high butter-fat records. He possesses the power of transmitting this quality to a remarkable degree, as his heifers now being milked in Hopelands herd are doing exceptionally well, junior two-year-olds having already produced to 3351 b fat uncompleted under group test. Prince Oxford Charming, the sire of the other heifer, has great breeding and butter-fat backing, three of his grandparents being imported, Clarion, sire of 16 c.o.r. daughters, Brampton’s Merry Boy with 19 c.o.r. daughters and Sybil’s Gipsy. One of Prince Oxford Charming’s daughters sold at the 1933 sale is expected to give 5001 b fat under association test, and they are all good producers. These six heifers are all from selected dams. None but the best are kept for breeding at Hopelands. These heifers are incalf to Wonder View Halo Lad, by Brampton’s Dreaming Sam, the Holly Oak herd sire. His dam is Meon Halo, who has a c.o.r. of 5101 b fat at four years on three quarters and calved 14 days after the test. She is bred from Holly Bank Squire, Lady Peggy and Royalty of Peketapu families. MENTONE JERSEY HERD TWO OUTSTANDING BULLS. This year this herd will be represented at the National Sale on Monday with two outstanding bulls. Founded on the blood of the great breeding and producing cow Sultans Daisy (9681 b fat —world’s record 1919-24), Mentone is always in a unique position to supply cattle of outstanding merit from both a show and production standard. Bulls of this blood have been used in such herds as Messrs. A. E. Watkin, Takanini (27, H. B. Lepper, G. E. Yelchich, Waiuku, and Chas. Stephens, Whangarei, to mention a few, with outstanding success, and the present offering affords a greater opportunity than ever to secure blood of this strain to studmasters. The first bull, a three-year-old, Mentone Concentrate, is royally bred. A line bred Sultan Daisy bull through her two'wonderful daughters, Meadowvale Everlasting and Meadowvale Perfect Day. His dam, Meadowvale Everlasting, 8271 b fat gold medal mature cow, 1929, was a daughter of Marshal Aldan (imp.) out of Sultans Daisy. Everlasting carries a wonderful udder, exceedingly capacious and of beautiful shape and texture, milking up to 7sib daily. She is one of the Dominion’s most outstanding cows and was another purchase by Mr. A. E. Watkin from this stud. Mentone Concentrate is by the outstanding show and dairy sire Mentone Fashionable Fern. He is a son of imported Golden Ferns Oxford Lad, which has daughters of up to 7521 b fat and who goes back to such notabilities as Biondi’s Golden Oxford, General Cowslip, Rosebay Was Wanted, etc. Mentonvale Perfect Day is the dam of Mentone Fashionable Fern. She has a record which is unsurpassed. A c.o.r. of 5741 b fat as a junior two-year-old and 6181 b fat as a senior two-year-old with three calves in 24 months. Champion twice at Stratford, also champion at New Plymouth, in addition to winning the Hawera £5OO c.o.r. stakes, Mentone Concentrate is everything his breeding suggests, having the blood behind him. and a backing on four nearest dams of 9871 b fat. His yearling son is out of Maori Judy, a cow bred by Mr. Chas. Lepper purchased specially on account of her outstanding type and udder. She is of Sultans Daisy (9681 b fat), Vivandiere (11361 b fat), Elf’s Beauty (8001 b fat) blood and when shown as a two-year-old won first with her - herd mate in pairs at Stratford and was generally recognised as the lest uddered two-year-old in Taranaki. Maori Judy, incidentally, is at present on c.o.r. test and so far has headed the senior two-year-olds for New Zealand, promising to be its premier two-year-old this year. In her first nine months she will do anproximately 6001 b of fat.
