WHANGAMOMONA NEWS

TENNIS SEASON ENDS. During the week-end the cup finals were decided on the local tennis courts. In the ladies’ game Miss E. Geever beat Miss N. Geever, 35 points to 30. The game was most interesting, the winner playing a hard, fast game, while her opponent adopted steady sure tactics which at times looked likely to gain a victory. The game was played almost entirely from the back lines, and was a series of long rallies from one corner of the court to the other. The men’s cup was won by R. Buckenham, who received a handicap of one point from L. A. Robinson. The winner, who had a margin of 13 points, gained many points on his fast service, but relied upon short low shots mostly, preventing his opponent from getting in his drives which were certain kills on any balls which rose any height. Mr. Chas. Gilmour, who was also in the finals lost to R. Buckenham recently, going down 35 points to 50, after a good game won by Buckenham’s sure work at the net. Personal.

Miss M. Carmichael, assistant at the Whangamomona school, left on Monday for Awatuna on transfer. During her short stay here Miss Carmichael has proved a popular and capable teacher, and her ability as a pianist was a valuable asset. She entered heartily into all phases of school life, and her loss will be felt keenly by children and parents. A very enjoyable dance was held in the Kohuratahi Hall under the auspices of the Kohuratahi Sports Club. The music, supplied by the Royal Maori String Band, was a special attraction. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss E. Smith and Mr. Nickel. A cake was won by Mr. B. Corbett. Messrs. R. Nairn, D. Willis and J. Carver were masters of ceremonies. Extras were supplied by Mesdames J. Carver and A. J. Curry. During the evening items were contributed by members of the orchestra.
