MYSTERIOUS SOS MESSAGE

CALL RECEIVED FROM TASMAN. THE ORIGIN NOT ASCERTAINED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10 p.m. Sydney, May 11. A mysterious S.O.S. radio message was picked up by coastal shipping last night. The signal was heard by the operator on the freighter Sirsa in Bass Strait about 8 p.m. Simultaneously an urgent request was received from a powerful New Zealand station asking all Australian shipping immediately to clear the air for 15 minutes as that station also had heard the S.O.S. from somewhere in the Tasman Sea.

Fifteen minutes later the same New Zealand station told the ships to carry on as that station would continue to listen throughout the night.
