ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

JULIAN CUP COMPETITION STRATFORD’S GOOD EFFORT. ONE ALL DRAW WITH ALBION. The second series of Association football matches in the first round of the senior competition for the Julian Cup was played on Saturday. At Stratford Stratford drew with Albion, one goal each. On the New Plymouth racecourse Moturoa defeated Pirates by 10 goals to nil. The Caledonian club again failed to field a team, with the result that the Waitara club was without a game. Though Stratford could raise only nine men to meet Albion at Stratford, the .same team fully justified its decision .to play by holding Albion to a draw, one goal each. Stratford’s performance was remarkable in view of its handicap, and can be ascribed chiefly to a lack of punch among the Albion forwards, who let several good opportunities pass. The backs on both sides gave good exhibitions and the three Stratford forwards, who had to cover the ground of five men, played magnificently. Albion strove to gain the advantage in the final stages and was held out chiefly by the Stratford goalie, Millar, who stopped many hard shots and cleared admirably. The teams were:

Stratford: H. Millar; A. Beal, C. Henderson; J. Jones, L. Henderson, Clements; W. Barron, L. Jones, T. Bly th. Albion: A. Nichols; G. Rendall, H. Lloyd; J. Jamieson, S. Wood, A. Berry; V. Upshall, T. Murdoch, N. Fink, J. Smith, A. White. The game opened raggedly with Stratford playing a full defence and feeling the absence of two forwards in attack. The three men matched against the five Albion forwards held their end up particularly well, but the weight of numbers told, and after about 15 minutes the ball was passed to White, .who centred to Fink. He beat C. Henderson and scored from the centre. Stratford almost evened when L. Henderson gave possession to Clements, who sent in a hot shot that Nichols deflected over the bar, leaving Albion one up at half-time.

Much faster play characterised the second spell, during the first part of which Stratford pressed strongly only to lose the ascendancy to Albion towards the end of the game. Blyth received the ball at the halfway line and sent L. Jones away. He made a great solo run, beat three men and scored with a well judged shot that left Nichols standing. From then on Albion made repeated attempts to regain the ball, but the Stratford defence was fully equal to the task imposed on it. Stratford 1 Albion 1 Mr J. Thompson refereed. WIN BY 10 GOALS TO NIL MOTUROA AGAINST THE PIRATES. STRONG FRONT LINE COUNTS. Ten goals to nil was the score by Moturoa against Pirates at the New Plymouth racecpurse. Strengthened by P. Gardner at centre and J. Hill at outside right, the Moturoa forward line was a scoring machine, but the game was not entirely one-sided, particularly in the first spell. Two of Moturoa’s goals were scored when there was some doubt whether the scorer was on side. The teams were:— Moturoa: Kenny; Crawford, R. Johns; W. Thomson, J. Thomson, F. Roper; A. Smith, R. Roper, Gardner, Christenson, Hill., Pirates: Dumbell; H. Parrish, McKay, R. Parrish, Milne, Wilmshurst; Ryan, Gillies, Anderson, Cole, Whittle. From the kick-off Moturoa set up an immediate attack and Hill swung in a long shot from the side to test Dumbell; J. Thomson returned the rebound and the goalie threw out. Hill centred for R. Ropier to shoot against Dumbell. Dumbell was kept strenuously on the defence and made four or five very skilful saves from Gardner, Hill and Roper. McKay got th’ ball away to Whittle and Anderson, who tested Kenny. Milne, Whittle, Cole and Anderson troubled Moturoa until Johns cleared. Gardner registered Moturoa’s first goal. Hill swung in another to curve in towards the goalmouth, but the wind caught the ball and lodged it against the post. Pirates got away, Milne passing up to Anderson, Gillies and Ryan and .back* to Anderson whose continuing kick was neatly heeled by Crawford when the position looked dangerous. Hill scored the second goal. Further play was in favour of the Moturoa men though they did not have it all their own way. Hill, Christensen, Gardner and R. Roper through interpassing kept the goalie, McKay and Parrish on the defensive until Milne and Wilmshurst, who was playing well, cleared and Pirates went away to test Kenny. Crawford cleared. Pirates forwards tried several times to come in, but the defence held.

Pirates started well but W. Thomson cleared and Gardner tested Kenny. Shortly afterwards Gardner scored the third goal. McKay, who had gone to the forwards, strengthened Pirates’ attack and Crawford and W. Thomson were kept on the defensive. Ryan attempted several shots, but they were stopped before reaching Kenny. Moturoa surrounded Pirates’ goal, but Anderson cleared and Ryan took a shot, Kenny clearing to McKay, who shot over the bar. A sharp rally by Moturoa found Smith in possession. Running through fast he sent a short shot against Dumbell, who fell to push the ball out; Hill took a shot on the rebound without success, but shortly afterwards the ball came to him again when he appeared to be off-side. His shot found the net.. The fifth goal was scored by Gardner skilfully; dribbling up, he was stopped! by Wilmshurst, but promptly turned towards the ball as it left Wilmshurst’s toe to shoot an.unbeatable one between the posts from 20 yards out. Hill scored two more goals and Smith three. The game was then a mere shooting match. The match ended with the score: Moturoa '• Pirates ® Mr. G. E. Roper was the referee. SCHOOL MATCH PLAYED. A friendly, match between Moturoa school and Convent was played on Saturday, Moturoa winning by eight goals to nil (Healy 4, Rae 2, Ramsdale and Collins).
