TRAVEL BY FOREIGN SHIP

MR. STANLEY BRUCE CENSURED. ASKED TO GIVE AN EPLANATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Rec. 11.50 p.m. Sydney, April 27. Mr. S. M. Bruce, High Commissioner in London, has been asked to “please explain why you booked a passage to America in the Monterey, a foreignowned ship, when to be true to your own principles you might have travelled in the Aorangi.” Mr. Bruce’s action has been criticised by a section of the Press and by the Marine Stewards’ Union.. Mr. Bruce wrote a letter to the union explaining that an eleventh-hour visit to Brisbane prevented him from travelling in the Aorangi. Therefore in order to be back in London early in June he was compelled to travel in the Monterey. “It is distasteful to me to travel in a foreign steamer if a British ship is available, but in this instance there is no alternative,” he added.
