THE MOKI TUNNEL

AN ENERGETIC COMMENCEMENT. ABOUT SIXTY MEN ENGAGED. About sixty men are engaged in the preliminary work in connection with the construction of the tunnel through the Moki saddle. A tramway from the southern end of the proposed tunnel to enable the material to be dumped has been almost - ' completed, and on the northern side a new roadway at a considerably lower level than the present road is being constructed. Some fairly heavy cutting and filling will be required here. It is expected the work on the tunnel will be put through within a year if the numerical strength of the present staff is maintained. Most of the men are from Tangarakau village, where they were employed in constructing the tunnels on the railways and therefore are skilled in the work in which they are now engaged.
