POPPY DAY APPEAL

NEW PLYMOUTH COLLECTION. HELP FOR WAR SUFFERERS. The annual Poppy Day Appeal of the New Plymouth Returned Soldiers’ Association will be held to-morrow, when members of the public will be asked to remember and help those brave men who, through their war disabilities, are unable to make a living sufficient to supply the ordinary necessaries of life. Much was promised these men in the early days after the war, but unfortunately time passes and we soon forget This year it is hoped that the townspeople’s response will be even more generous than usual—the money is urgently needed and the organisers of the Poppy Day appeal beg that the public will remember that this is the only day in the year when assistance is asked for those who gave so much for the country. The poppies sold on Poppy Day are made by disabled returned soldiers, and it is again pointed out that the whole of the proceeds from the sale of these poppies is used for the relief of distress among returned soldiers and their dependents, not one penny being deducted for administration or organisation purposes.

The organisation of Poppy Day is again in charge of Mrs. R. H. Quilliam, and complete arrangements have been made by her in connection with the appeal throughout the district. The headquarters for the day will be the Taranaki Women’s Club, which has again been placed at the disposal of the organisers of the appeal. Collectors are asked to called for their boxes and poppies, which will be ready at the club this afternoon. Mrs. Hartnell, assisted by Mesdames Thompson and Butchart, will again be in charge of the arrangements for morning and afternoon tea for helpers, and Messrs. Cartwright, A. L. Humphries and T. P. Anderson will assist Mrs. Quilliam at headquarter. Messrs. Brodie and. Wiggins and Miss J. Harvey will act as cashiers.

The mart has again been organised by Mrs. Blackley, and will be in the premises until recently occupied by Miss Tichbon, in the H.B. buildings, Devon Ctreet Central. Mrs. Blackley has met with a particularity generous response to her appeal for gifts for sale at the mart, and there will be a wonderful array of goods, which will no doubt find a ready sate.
