FARMERS ON RIFLE RANGE

SHOOTING FOR C.A.C. TROPHY DOMINION-WIDE COMPETITION. OKATO BRANCH AGAIN TOPS LIST. Twenty-six teams representing seventeen branches of the North Taranaki provincial district of the Farmers’ Union from Okau to Okato along the coast and inland to Huiroa took part - in the ; annual shoot for the C.A.C. trophy yesterday at the Rewa Rewa range, New Plymouth, yesterday. The competition is open to the whole of New Zealand and must be completed by Saturday. North Taranaki, which competed for the trophy last year for the first time for many years won the shield, Okato putting up the splendid score of 487. Okato again leads for North - Taranaki, having scored 446 yesterday, and as the conditions this year have been altered to provide for shooting under service conditions with no aperture sights or slings, Okato’s score will be difficult to beat. The number of teams this year constituted a record for Taranaki, being seven more than last year, and the standard showed a considerable improvement Conditions were fairly good for shooting though the light at times was tricky. The wind, however, was blowing steadily across the range. Okato entered the same team as last year, S. Roebuck and R. Benton topping the score with 92. Wharehuia was again second, scoring 329, and Toko, which now possesses an up-to-date rifle range and entered three teams, displaced Urenui for third place, scoring 314. Urenui dropped back to fourth with 307 points. Fourteen teams scored over 200 points, compared with only six last year. Sergeant-Major J, T. R. Bell and Mr. O. P. George, deputy-president of the New Plymouth Rifle Club, had charge of the range. Mr. E. Armitage had charge of the butts and Mr. D. Le Cren Morgan, provincial secretary of the union, was signal officer. Major A. E. Conway, N.Z.S.C., was present. Complete arrangements had been made, twelve targets being used, and the shooting was completed early. The conditions provided .for five men in each team and seven shots at each of the 300 yards, 500 yards and 600 yards ranges. The scores were:—
