TEST MATCH CAPTAINCY
COMMENT IN ENGLISH PRESS. JARDINE’S DECISION DISCUSSED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, April 1. The Observer says that if Jardine is not to act as captain of the English test team, the public should be plainly told the reason. There might be an idea that the M.C.C. is subserviently deferring to the wishes of Australia and yielding to pressure for the sake of a peaceful atmosphere. The Sunday Times says that the general regret at Jardine’s decision not to act as captain will be intensified by the fact that it is difficult to dissociate it from leg theory barracking incidents. Mr. Bruce Harris in the Standard says that no other leader combines Jardine’s high abilities as a player and captain, and indeed no other amateur is worth a place in England's side. “Jardine’s absence will be deplored by tens of thousands of English cricket lovers. It can hardly be doubted that the effect of the so-called bodyline trouble has been to deprive England of her best captain.”
