WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Tun Township: A large gathering of members met on Monday to farewell the president, Mrs. H. Webber. Representatives were present from Taiporohenui, Ohawe,. Okaiawa, Ketemarae, Whareroa, Te Roti, Normanby, Turuturu and Tawhiti. Mrs. J. R. Corrigan presided and, after welcoming the visitors, expressed regret at the departure of Mrs. Webber. On behalf of the members Mrs. Corrigan presented Mrs. Webber with a beautiful bouquet, with best wishes for the future. Mrs. A. J. King presented Mrs. Webber with a handsome rose bowl from the members, expressing the esteem m which she was held during her term of office as president. Mrs. S. Panenui, president of the Taiporohenui Maori Institute, wished Mrs. Webber future happiness and asked her to accept a cake stand from the members of her institute. Good wishes for future success and happiness were also extended to Mrs. Webber by Mesdames Foy (Ohawe), Crosbie (Okaiawa), Bloor (Te Roti), Tidswell (Tawhiti), Minhinnick (Ketemarae) and Allan (Normanby) • Mrs. Webber thanked all present for the beautiful gifts and said she did not need anything to remind _ her of Tun Township as she regarded it as her own special institute. She intended to always be a member and so keep in touch with its general activities. Two competitions were held. What We Own” brought 14 correct entries and in the draw Mrs. H. Cressey secured the prize “Advertisements” was won by Mrs. Kendall with 20 correct answers. During the afternoon Mr. M. R. Jones and Mr. S. Veitch addressed the gathering on behalf of the Returned Soldiers Association Poppy Day effort. They asked all members of womens institutes to assist in the sale of poppies in the rural areas. There was need for an effort to secure sufficient funds to assist the returned men and their dependents during the coming winter. Mr. Jones also expressed the appreciation of the R.S.A. to Mrs. Webber for her generous assistance in many ways and wished her success in her new home. Te Roti: The annual .meeting of the women’s institute was held on Friday. Mrs. Bloor, the president, was m the chair. The annual report showed that the institute had had a successful year. Attendances at the monthly meetings had been good and keen interest had been taken in the various demonstrations. Members had attended group meetings and delegates had Keen sen to the council meetings at Eltham and Patea and to the Dominion conference at Christchurch. Tire institute had acquitted itself creditably at th* Hawera winter show. A series of euchre and dance parties had been run during the winter months and had proved very successful, both socially and financially. The balance-sheet showed a very creditable balance and during the year donations had been sent to the Blind Institute, the Governor-Generals fund, the Dominion executive and the Taranaki Federation executive, also toys to Mr. Hooker for the children in mental hospitals and a parcel of baby clothes to the . welfare officer. • During the year the first birthday party had been held and had proved an outstanding success, when the members of the drama circle staged a short oneact play. A much valued member, Miss Roberts, had left during the year owing to her marriage and removal to another district. Thanks were accorded to all members and to the committee for their consistent support, to the hall committee, for the free use of the hall, for the afternoon meetings and to all who had assisted to make the institute the success it has proved. The following are the officers for the coming year: Mesdames Bloor, president; Henry, vice-president, Fowler, secretary; Grierson, treasurer and McAsey, Rudkin, Brunold, and Misses B. Seed, M. Cockerton and A. Adlam, committee. After the business had been dealt with Miss Kaye, the president of the Taranaki Federation, addressed the members on the ideals and spirit of the movement and was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for. her very instructive address. Other visitors to the meeting were Mrs. Kerr, president of the Tariki Women’s Institute, Mrs. L. Brown, Norfolk Road,.and Mrs. Hawkes, Waverley. , . « The competition for the best plate or pikelets was won by Mrs. Smith 1, Mrs. Bloor 2, and Mrs. Henry 3. Mrs. Bloor was the winner of the points prize fot the monthly competitions. Mrs. Grierson and Mrs. Oppenheim were appointed delegates to attend the annual council meeting at Inglewood on April 28. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Grierson and Henry.
