HEAVY EASTER TRAFFIC

MANY PASSENGERS ON RAILWAYS.

Large numbers of passengers have travelled on all trains arriving at or leaving New Plymouth during the past few days. Several special expresses have been run to and from Wellington and Auckland. A feature of the traffic on the Auckland section has been the heavy demand for sleeping berths.

A special express to Auckland on Thursday night took 65 passengers from New Plymouth and 145 from Stratford. In addition to the J. C. Williamson comic opera company, 45 people went to Auckland by an express which left New Plymouth at 6.10 a.m. yesterday. About 60 were aboard at Stratford. The usual Auckland express last night had 40 New Plymouth passengers, a number which was increased to over 70 when the train left Stratford. The express from-Auck-land yesterday morning carried 224 when leaving Okahukura and 107 when leaving Stratford. Ninety-seven arrived at New Plymouth. On Thursday’s Wellington-New Plymouth express 167 passengers were aboard at Hawera and 143 at New Plymouth. The same express yesterday had 98 passengers at Hawera and 90 at New Plymouth. A special train from Wellington yesterday arrived at New Plymouth with 100 passengers. A total of 187 were aboard at Aramoho and 148 at Hawera. Ninety-seven passengers left New Plymouth for Wellington on Thursday, there being 248 aboard at Aramoho. The down express yesterday was also well patronised.
