Fishing under Novel Conditions. A number of Patea Maoris enjoyed a day’s eel fishing under novel conditions when the water reservoir at the hydroelectric station was drained on Friday. The desired scouring which took place when the diversion gate was opened brought eels and fresh-water perch to the spot where the Maoris, wading waist deep, made the most of their opportunity. The large volume of water converging on the outlet brought a large quantity of silt with it, the cascade of mud discolouring the sea over a large area for a long period. Real Ingenuity.

Real ingenuity was shown by a Hawera motorist recently. Wishing to crawl under his car, but not having a pit, he was temporarily at a loss. He then hit on a brilliant expedient and ran the wheels on one side on to the footpath, and spectators had the interesting view of him lying on his back in the gutter. Escaped Rooster on Roof.

A rooster being taken to an auction mart at Hawera on Saturday caused a stir when it escaped in High Street and fled to the roof of one of the biggest shops. A passer-by amused the crowd by clambering up after it, catching it, losing it again, following it in through a window, and emerging again with it.

Presbyterian Church Cantata. The sacred cantata “Eastertide” was rendered by the choir of St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Hawera, on • Sunday night The soloists were Misses Smith (soprano) and Lamb (alto), Messrs. A. Galloway (tenor) and C. L. Hay (baritone). There was a large congregation, to which the Rev. A. G. Irvine gave an appropriate address. Woman Motorist’s Feat.

Mrs. E. Payne, Hawera, has returned from a motor trip of 1100 miles, which is a remarkable feat for a woman of her age. Although 75 years old Mrs. Payne drove over every inch of the tour, which took her over all classes of roads and as far north as Dargaville.
