GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL ROLL
EARLIER ENROLMENT PROPOSED. PRINCIPAL GIVEN AUTHORITY. Consideration by the New Plymouth High Schools Board of the enrolment for 1935 taking place in December, 1934, instead of February, 1935, was asked by the principal of the Girls’ High' School (Miss D. N. Allan) in her report to-the board last night. Miss Allan stated that after the proficiency results were available most parents decided whether or not their children were to continue at high school. Early enrolment would mean the early settlement of the staffing question and the organisation for the new year. The chairman (Mr. H. R. Billing): Will the parents enrol then? . Miss Allan: It is done elsewhere. Wellington did it and found it very successful.. Mr. A. L. Moore: I know a number or schools do it but they do not get their enrolments ' complete until January. Mr. W. H. Moyes said that last year he had sent two oi his men around the schodls, ascertained the number who. had gained, proficiency and who would be going to high school. There was no difficulty in finding out the number of pupils going on to high school as far as the town schools were concerned. Mr. P. J. H. White asked if' it were not a fact that there was a lesser number of girls going on to high school than boys. . Miss Allan said it was this leakage it was wanted to stop. It was decided on Miss Douglas’ motion that Miss Allan be given a free hand in the matter this year in the nature of experiment. The attendance in the past month had suffered slightly owing to the prevalence' of mumps, eight boarders and a number of day scholars having been absent on this account, stated the headmaster of the Boys’ High School (Mr. W. H. Moyes) in his report. The Director of Education had paid a short visit to the school on March 20 and had been particularly interested in the development of the agricultural course. The director had intimated that he would try to pay the school a longer visit in the near future. . In connection with the school farm further work had been done in the paddocK set aside for pig breeding. The lay-out of the eight small paddocks had been completed and another pig house bull.. A party of 21 boys spent an enjoyable and instructive field day at Mr. Guy Bell’s farm at Oakura on March 20. The board decided to forward Mr. Bell a letter of appreciation. The roll stood at 322, stated the girls school principal (Miss D. N. Allan) in her 'report. The honours board would hold no more names and it was impossible for the woodwork classes to make one for the school. Miss Allan asked thau a new board be supplied. , Miss Allan said it was a pity to have the dux list on the honours board complete to 1926 and no further. The obtaining of estimates for a new board was left to Miss Allan and Mr. There were present at the meeting Mr. H. R. Billing (chairman), Miss Douglas, Mr S. G. Smith, M.P., Dr. E. F. Sesst G.S. Clarke G. H. Dolby J. S. S. Medley, L. A. Nolan and P. J. H. White (members).
