EXISTENCE IN QUEENSLAND ITALIANS IN THE CANE FIELDS REVELATION IN COURT CASE FELLOW WORKER MENACED By Telegraph—Press Assn.-Copyright Rec. 11.15 p.m. Sydney, March 20. The existence of a “black hand’ society among the Italian community in the cane fields of northern Queensland was revealed in the course of the trial of Giuseppe Buiti and Giuseppe Parisi, who were charged with wounding Giovanni Jacona with intent to disfigure him. lacona has already been committed for trial for the murder of Nicola Mamomme at Innisfail. He is permanently disfigured, having lost both ears. lacona gave evidence that he had received several letters signed “The Black Hand,” in which money was demanded from’him. The demands were accompanied by menaces if he did not comply. He produced letters in which some of his friends were threatened with the loss of their cane crops by fire if he failed to influence them to send money by a messenger specially nominated. The case was adjourned.
