FORCED DOWN IN SNOW

BYRD EXPEDITION AEROPLANE.

EXACT POSITION UNKNOWN. By Telegraph— Press Assn.— Copyright Rec. 10 p.m. New York, March 20. The Byrd Expedition at Little America reports that a monoplane transporting supplies to an advance outpost was forced down on a return flight, it Is believed about 15 miles from Little America. Another aeroplane and a ground’ party were organised for a search when the heavy fog clears. The pilot, William Rawlin, and the wireless operator, Clay. Bailey, reported by radio that they landed at 8 o’clock on Sunday evening and burled the monoplane in snow to protect it from the high winds. They did not know the exact position as they were flying blind. Rear-Admiral Byrd instructed them to await rescuers for at least five days before attempting to make camp, after which the radio communication failed. The men have a tent, a cooking stove, sleeping bags, fur clothing and 30 days' rations. •
