THANKS OF ROTARY CLUB

LADIES’ WORK AT CONFERENCE. MOST SUCCESSFUL IN HISTORY. As a mark of appreciation of their services at the recent conference at New Plymouth, the wives of members of the New Plymouth Rotary Club were yesterday entertained to luncheon. were present and under Rotarian W. G. Stewart community singing went with a swing. . Rotarian R. H. Quilliam, president of the club, was unable to be present, ana Rotarian W. H. Jones (vice-president) officiated. The president sent a note, paying tribute to the wonderful work done by the ladies at the conference and congratulating - them on the fine results attained. The vice-president supplemented the president’s remarks, and said he was pleased to see so many present. It had been shown during the conference that the feeling and spirit of friendship among Rotarians extended to the ladies as. well as amongst the clubs of the Dominion. As representative of Rotary International, and on behalf of the clubs of the Dominion, District Governor T. C. List congratulated the ladies upon the splendid work they had done during the recent conference. He was, he said, receiving letters of gratitude and appreciation from all over the Dominion, all paying tribute to the success of a memorable conference and the part the local ladies had played in all the social, functions. He had been advised that it was desirable to hold the conference in the town in which the district governor resided. The local club had acquiesced. It was a great responsibility for the club and the town, but, thanks to the ladies, the conference had proved an unqualified success. J “It is impossible to find words to adequately express my appreciation of the success achieved. You must take it as read. I need not single out any one P® r " son. It was a team job, and one carried out in fine spirit. A conference like ours depends for its success. on every unit working sweetly, efficiently and in unison. We were certainly fortunate in the spell of fine weather during the conference, but, all the same, the interest and heartiness shown by the ladies was largely responsible for the fine results achieved.” Rotarian List went on to repeat a statement he had heard made that the conference had put New Plymouth thoroughly on the map. “I believe that that is true,” he said, “and that the conference did more in advertising the town’s scenic assets and resources than all the propaganda work done during the years gone by.” He had attended many functions in New Zealand and overseas, but no social functions had been characterised by such a fine spirit and had been more successful than those at the recent conference. The club could never adequately repay the debt of gratitude to the ladies for all they had done. The District Governor then asked Mrs. R. H. Quilliam, wife of the president of the club, and Mrs. Deighton, secretary of the ladies’ committee, to stand, and he thanked them and their willing workers for the success achieved. Behind all the spoken words, the men had a feeling of immense gratitude to the ladies, whose work had made the conference an outstanding one in the history of the Rotary movement in New Zealand.

Replying on behalf of the ladies, Mrs. Quilliam thanked the speakers for their kindly expressions and the club for inviting the ladies to the luncheon. All the work had been done willingly add cheerfully. The fact that the -District Governor was a member of their own club gave them an incentive to give of their best and made it much easier for them all.'

Before the luncheon party broke up, Rotarian W. L. Hay sang two songs, and ■Rotarian Stewart led a further round of community singing. Mr. Harold Morey was accompanist
