TUHUA SCHOOL NEWS
WORKING BEE HELD. I A working bee was held at the Tuhua School on March 3, when the long grass and fern was scythed and burnt to supply potash for the experimental plots. Although only a few assembled, a considerable amount of work was done. Tasker Hayward, one of last year’s ■pupils, won the Mary Haigh Cup at the Ohura Show for the best conditioned heavy breed calf. He also gained the second prize (equal) fox' the best school child’s plot. The school was visited recently by the agricultural instructor, Mr. D. Mackay, and by the school inspector, Mr. Henry. Both were pleased with the beginning made on the year’s work. A Lucky Escape.
A lucky escape from fatal injuries was experienced by George Nelson about a fortnight ago. His horse bolted with him down a long hill. On one of the dangerous comers he met a motor-car. The force of the impact threw Mr. Nelson several feet into the air, and the ■horse skidded about 41 feet along _ the road. Medical assistance was obtained from Taumarunui and it was found that Mr. Nelson was suffering from slight concussion and a broken wrist and abrasions. The horse broke one of its forelegs and was destroyed. Mr. Nelson is now well on his way to recovery. General Items.
A dangerous bend on the main highway at the 12 miles has been widened and lowered by seven feet. This has made a great improvement to the road, which, when metalled shortly will give all-weather access to Ohura from northern districts, via Ongarue or Okahukura. The public has been quick to appreciate this work. Personal. Miss Zena Hayward, Auckland, is visiting her parents on a short holiday. Mr. J. Hanley, who has been surfaceman on the road since the flood of March last, has been transferred to a similar position at Waitewhena.
