OPUNAKE TOWN BOARD

IMPROVEMENT IN FINANCE. CONTROL OF PUBLIC LIBRARY. , The monthly meeting of the Opunake Town Board was held on ■ Monday evening. Present: Messrs. A. J. Brennan (chairman), T. P. Hughson junr., L. Des Forges, J. Wilson and Dr. Griffen. Messrs. L. M. Stephenson and W. C. Clements were reappointed the board’s representatives. on the Egmont National Park Board.

'With reference to the land occupied by the old public library the department wrote that no title to it had been issued. —lt was decided that the board should take legal steps to have the land intituled, with the board as trustee.

Replying to the board’s question as to the board’s liability in the event of the Seaside Society erecting cattle stops on the main traffic road a legal opinion was received that the board woiild be liable , for damage in the event of an accident. Messrs. Wilson, Des Forges and Hughson were appointed a committee to consider the leasing of the Athenaeum building. . ' . The clerk (Mr. Thayer) reported that the financial position was better than at the same period last year and a reduction in overdraft had been made.. The building subsidies to come in and the Highway Board subsidy would -further improve the position. The chairman considered the financial position better than he had anticipated. The clerk reported that the library was now in working order. Some repairs were necessary. It was decided to appoint a library committee representing the Tower Board, comprising Dr. Griffen, Mr. S. Boyds and the clerk (Mr. Thayer), this committee to appoint iwo members to represent the subscribers. The clerk was instructed to take measures to mitigate the nuisance of leaking verandahs oh the Main - Street, also to see that the nuisance of boxthom cut and left on some streets was abated. The domain caretaker reported repairs to fences and drains and maintenance work. His request for fencing posts was agreed to. - The chairman intimated tnat the Minister of Lands (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) would visit the Opunake district on Friday. He would be accompanied by the member for the district (Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P.). The Town Board will meet and welcome the Ministerial party and bring before Mr.' Ransom several matters of local interest. It is probable other local bodies will also meet the. Minister.
