NEXT EMPIRE GAMES TEAM
S. LAY ASKED TO JOIN TOURISTS. STRATFORD MAN UNABLE TO GO. Stan. Lay, present New Zealand champion javelin thrower and New Zealand representative in that event at the Olympic Games in 1928 and subsequently the Empire Games, has been invited to join the New Zealand team for the next Empire Games, in South Africa this year. Lay has had to decline the invitation. The invitation was received in an urgent telegram last night to Mr. D. J. Benjamin, secretary of the Stratford club, from Mr. L. O. Hooker, secretary of the West Coast (N. 1. Centre, on behalf of Mr. L. Tracy, New Zealand secretary. Mr. Benjamin communicated with Lay, who reluctantly decided that he could not go owing to business reasons. Stan. Lay, after having been absent from national championship meetings, regained his javelin championship at Wellington last month with an effort fully up to his old standard under conditions that might have been more favourable. It seemed tjiat Lay’s effort this year was fully up to Empire standard.
