PROVINCIAL CROQUET

TARANAKI TOURNAMENT RESULTS OF FIRST DAY’S PLAY. MATCHES ARRANGED FOR TO-DAY. Splendid entries in all sections are an encouraging feature of the Taranaki Croquet Association’s annual tournament, which opened at New Plymouth yesterday morning. The tournament games are being played at the lawns of the New Plymouth, West End, Pukekura Park and Central clubs, with the headquarters at the New Plymouth Club. All the lawns were in excellent condition and the weather was favourable. It is expected the tournament will occupy seven playing days. Among the visitors are 15 from Wellington, and others from Palmerston North, Wanganui and South Taranaki, in addition to many from the New Plymouth clubs. The entrants include Captain F, L. Hartnell, the present New Zealand open singles champion, and president of the New Zealand Croquet Council. Mr. J. Gibbs, holder of the North Island championship and handicap doubles, and Mrs. Henderson, Welling- ■ ton, who won the Taranaki ladies’ title last year, will also take part. Mrs. Mouatt, Wellington, whose sparkling croquet was a feature of the tournament last year and who recently won the open championship at the Wellington tournament, is present Detailed results of matches played yesterday are:— HANDICAP DOUBLES.
