STRATFORD

Miss Shields, Ohakune, is visiting friends at Stratford. Mrs. C. D. Sole, New Plymouth, has been spending a few days with her daughter, Mrs. Ebbet. Mrs. A. Coleman and Miss Joan Coleman has returned from a week-end visit to Awakino. Mrs. John Beale and Miss Joyce Beale, who have been visiting Remuera, have returned to Stratford. Mrs. R. Cardno, who has been away on holiday, has returned. Miss Gwen Eustace is away on holiday. Mrs. Harold Bayly, who has been the guest of her mother, Mrs. Monteith, New Plymouth, has returned to her home at Toko. Miss Grace North has returned to Stratford from a camping holiday at Urenui. Miss Bessie Boyd, one of the company of the Lurline, which arrived at Auckland yesterday on a world cruise, arrived by aeroplane yesterday on a visit to her people at Opunake Road. Miss Boyd will return to Auckland to-day. A carnival dance held in the town hall on Thursday night, although not largely attended, was enjoyable. The music was supplied by Brian Tatnel’s New Collegian dance band. Mr. G. Vinsen was master of ceremonies. Among those present were Mesdames Cleaver, W. Clarke, Attrill, H. Dixon, White, Maulder, Misses C. Whitmill, J. Buchanan, Foley, G. Brown, Shields (Ohakune), Cuff, B. Franks, N. Melville, Dwyer (2), Elgar, M. Kidd, Kelley, F. Paton, G. Dodunski, O. Cannon, Dempchy (2). Last night a bridge evening arranged by Mrs. Allen and Mrs- Hugo was held in honour of Miss Max Skoglund, who is leaving shortly to be married. The evening was held at Mrs. Alien’s residence, which was decorated with flowers. A presentation was made on behalf of the ladies’ present, who were Miss Skoglund, Mesdames Urwin, McLean, Riera, W. Boon, C. Williams, A. Hugo, Mark, O. Curtis, R. Tyrer, North, J. Boon, Rawles, R. Strachan, K. Pegg, N. Moss, L. Wynyard, Newell, Misses G. North, M. Curd, J. Jackson, Masters (2), J. Coleman, M. Malone, M. Lyons, M. Whittle. Mrs. Trot+er gave a dance in the Kahouri hall on Tuesday in honour of the 21st birthday of Miss Hazel Trotter. Miss Trotter was wearing a frock of blue floral crepe-de-chine. The evening was pleasantly spent in games and dancing interspersed with items. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Sharrock and partner, while Miss D. Crosby and Mr. Neilson won the statue dance. Items were given by Miss Norma Spearman,

Mr. A. Sextus, Mr. Coffey and Mr. Neilson. The guests included Mesdames Briton (Palmerston North), Martin, Cleaver, Waite, Johnson, Paynter, Dunn (Mokoia), Johnson, Crosby (Mangamingi), Bonner, Boyd, Neilson, Stallard, Brieseman and Spearman, Misses Sharrock, Dimes, Stallard, Neilson, Bonner, Hardy, Vince, Spearman (2), Hurst (2), Brown, Melville and Crosby (2). The garden party held in Dr. Doris Gordon’s beautiful grounds was very successful, the various stalls doing a brisk business. The stall-holders were: Produce, Mesdames Lilley, Anderson and Grierson; work stall, Mrs. Kinnear Ross and Miss N. Alston; sweets stall, Misses Pat Brown and Maisie Smart; cakes, Mrs. J. C. Allen, Miss Margaret Phillips; tea rooms, Mesdames Pellew, Aitkin and McCluggage. Mrs. E. Coldwell was in charge of the croquet, competitions, which were both won by Mrs. Childs. Mr. C. Rogers’ orchestra played delightful items. Mrs. Grierson was the secretary. The Rev. J. MacGregor thanked everyone for their help in making it a successful function. Mrs. Halkett, Wanganui, is the guest of Mrs. Gardener.
