DECREASE IN SCHOOL ROLL

FITZROY HEADMASTER’S REPORT. MONTHLY ’ COMMITTEE MEETING. A slight decrease jh the roll number at the Fitzroy school, New Plymouth, compared with the same time last year was reported by the headmaster (Mr. G. A. Lyall) at the monthly meeting of the committee last night. The school opened after the summer vacation with a roll of 470, that at the beginning of 1933 being 478; Forty pupils were enrolled this; year and the attendance was 455. It was “touch and go” whether the school would retain it? grade, commented the chairman of the committee (Mr. J. A. Burr). New members of the staff were an additional assistant to be released as required for relieving work, two additional assistants and two probationary assistants, the headmaster’s report added. With the exception.of one, all had had previous experience at the school, so that their knowledge of the pupils and of the methods of teaching practised should be distinctly advantageous. Used text books had been given from promoted pupils and had been handed to pupils who would otherwise have found grave difficulty in obtaining them. The acting-scoutmaster (Mr. R. Hopkins) reported that four scouts from the troop attended a jamboree at Marton. No week-end parades were held in the holidays, but a week-end camp was held on the bank of the Waiwakaiho River between Christmas and New Year. A camp oven had been acquired by women supporters with the proceeds of euchre parties. Those present were Messrs. J. A. Burr, E. Armitage, C. R. Cook, R. H. Milne, R. J. Kibby, J. D. Robb, C. A. Voullaire and the headmaster.
