BOLD BID FOR SUPREMACY

FINAL OF SHEFFIELD SHIELD N.S.W. MAKES HEAVY SCORE IMPORTANCE OF THE MATCH SELECTION OF TEST TEAM By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 9.45 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 26. Requiring an outright win to retain the Sheffield Shield, the trophy for interstate cricket supremacy, New South Wailes is making a bold bid in the final match against Victoria, having scored 445 runs for the loss of two wickets in the first day’s play. The keenest interest is being taken in the match because of the fact that the Australian selectors are to choose on Wednesday the Test team to visit England. The weather to-day was ideal. Ponsford was unable to play for Victoria. A record attendance of 32,000 people was present. Tremendous excitement was caused by Bradman’s fireworks. Fingleton, who retired hurt, scored 78, W. Brown is undefeated with 187, Bradman scored 128 and Kippax 44. Victoria’s bowlers, Fleetwood-Smith and Ebeling, both of whom are Test possi - bilities, and McCormick and Ironmonger, were all severely punished, the batsmen being on top the whole day. Bradman hit four sixes off FleetwoodSmith, three being in the one over. Bradman was then caught out, deliberately throwing away his wicket. Brown’s magnificent batting is regarded as certain to ensure his inclusion in the Test team. His cover drives and leg-side shots were perfectly timed. Woodfull was much impressed by his capacity as an opening batsman. This is the third occasion in Sheffield Shield matches that Brown has acquitted himself finely.

Fingleton, too, batted like a champion. The Test selectors witnessed the match. They will choose the Test team next Wednesday.
