TAKAPUNA OPENS TO-DAY

MASTER BRIERLY’S CHANCES POOR WYNYARD PLATE FIELD. JONATHAN AND REREATU. (By “Hurry on.”) Though the fields for the opening of the Takapuna meeting to-day are good, they are not nearly as unweildy as has been the case at many northern meetings this season. The form of most of the runners has been well disclosed. The programme opens at noon with the

Killadar showed promise at Te Rapa in the spring but the turning course may not be in his favour. Morehu showed up at Pukekohe last Saturday and appears to be improving. Echo Song and Horowhenua were both finishing on in the same race and should do better here. Tahea Mea and Foreign. Money are possibilities but the best supported will probably be Morehu, Horowhenua and Kil-

Islands Cup but he does not seem very reliable and he has a big weight. United won at Ellerslie and his form looks good. Coqrthaven is useful in this type of race while Black Marlin is a good galloper when in the mood. United, Black Marlin and Thespis may do best.

Limbohm’s third to Lone Raider and Davolo at Trentham on Wednesday represents good form and if started here the Limond three-year-old will not lack support. Glenrata is a useful galloper when in form but Gold Pocket’s win at Pukekohe was convincing. Roman Mascot and Hawthorn appear'to be best of the others. The main fancies may be Gold Pocket, Limbohm and Roman Mascot.

Master Brierly’s desperate finish with Kiltowyn in the Grandstand Handicap on the final day at Ellerslie demonstrated that this-good galloper was back to his best. He has done well since and has only to handle tfce Shore course to put up a big bid for the honours. . Master Norval won the Alison Cup on this track in great style last November and has only to reproduce that form to take a. hand in the ’ finish. Speedmint would need to improve on her showing in .the Bay of Islands Cup to have a chance. Baroscope has lost all form but Mungatoon ran two solid races' at Thames. If he were at his best 7.4 would be a luxurious weight for Royal Artist and there appears to be an impression that he will stage a return to form shortly. Alley, Whakapara ' and Gay Marigold have all lightweights’ chances. Most support will probably; come for Master Brierly with Master Norval and Gay Marigold in solid demand.

The two-year-olds in the north do not appear to be a classy lot this season and the unlucky Royal Appellant has his chance here. Most opposition may come from High Crest, which showed a fine turn of pace at Te Rapa in the spring.

This is a most disappointing field for so good a stake. The issue would appear to lie between Boughal and the three-year-olds King Musk, Cherry King and Star Artist. Star Artist’s form at Ellerslie where she was fourth in the Railway points strongly to her chances here though the distance may prove in favour of . Cherry King.

Cherry King is' unlikely to start here. The solid Caliente has been running consistently lately. Gay Broney was prominent at Pukekohe last Saturday and should hold Royal Gallant and Ornamental safe. Jewelled Girdle ran a splendid - race on the second day at Ellerslie and is an improver. Wee Musk and Roxy have chances but the favourites are likely to be Caliente, Jewelled Girdle and Gay Broney.

Despite his weight Jonathan will keep them all busy here. He is well above the average and improving all the time. British Columbia and Karangapai have winning form to their credit while Marechai did well at Thames. Sinking Fund won a double on the Takapuna course in November and his showings at Ellerslie were full of merit. Limex, Exaggeration and Puriri Park are all possibilities but the pick of the lightweight is Rereatu. Rereatu has been galloping brilliantly at Takanini. In a good pool most money may come for Jonathan, Rereatu and Sinking Fund.

TARANAKI NOMINATIONS A SPLENDID RESPONSE. FIFTEEN HORSES IN CUP. • Nominations for the Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, which closed last night, are very gratifying to the club. All events have filled splendidly and the class of horse engaged is much better than has been the case during the past few years. (By “Childers.”) The Hawera trainers, O. Cox, W. Pine, J. Fryer and J. Brown returned from Wellington on Thursday with La Crown, Gibraltar, Oriel, Round Table and several new horses. Debut was not brought back. Round Table proved that he was very unlucky not to win during the Christ-mas-New Year racing by having an easy victory in the Trial Plate, his only start at the meeting. Now that he has ‘ broken the ice” Round Table should soon win again and he will take a power of beating in* the middle distance hack races at the approaching fixtures. Gibraltar was working so well previous to leaving Hawera that he seemed likely to have a great chance in the Wellington Cup, but unfortunately he fell in that event and was not able to be started on either the second or third days. He was out doing light, pacework yesterday morning, although one of his hind legs is slightly filled. He is a doubtful starter in the Egmont Cup.

Oriel ran two fine races which point to the big Nigger Minstrel 'gelding soon losing his maiden status. It was condition more than anything else which beat him, for his shortage of feed and work told on him in the final stages. He travelled much better on the trip than anticipated, eating very satisfactorily. It seems to be only a matter of this gelding feeding well for him to develop into a decidedly useful performer. ’ La Crown was rather, disappointing, for her recent form pointed to her running prominently. ■ She should do much better very shortly. ' Debut also failed to race up to expectations, stopping quickly after showing early pace both days. It has been decided to give him about six weeks’ spell and' he was entrained from Trentham to his diners’ farm at Mangaweka. New Arrivals. ' No fewer than six new- horses accompanied the local team back to Hawera. Of these 0/Cox received two, General Quex and the Limond-Lady. Bentinck colt. ■ The two-year-old General Quex, formerly trained at New Plymouth,' appears to be in good, fettle and p. g he was out working on the'tracks yesterday morning,, will probably be racing again very shortly. • The Lixnond—Lady Bentinck colt was in Cox’s charge for., a short time before leaving for Trentham, where he was offered at the yearling sales, being.passed jn at 325 guineas. This youngster is owned by G. F. Moore, Kai Iwi,-and is cldselv related to Golden Hair, Reremoana, Lady Cavendish, View Halloo and company. It is not yet certain whether he wih be immedJately; placed into regular training. If he does, O. Cox will have a team of seven under his care, Golden Hair, Hilary, Royal Peak, Friesland and Round Table being the others of his charges. J. Brown received a chestnut yearling filly by Limond out of Joanfax which was purchased at the sales for 225 guineas by F. S. Easton, Foxton. Joanfax (dam of Mehsande and Jonathan) is an English bred mare by Juggernaut from Ethel H by Picton out of Silver Grey, by Missel Thrush from Spell Bound by Necromancer. Mr. Easton, has raced a good many horses at various times, including two good performers in Amythas and Master Strowan. W. Pine purchased for 30 guineas at the sales a brown filly by, Gascony from Symballo by Psychology from Symbolism by Symington from Amphort by Amphion from Sierra by Springfield. Symballo was a half-sister to useful sorts in Killashandra, Brampton and Catalina (dam of Paleta, Vandyke and Catalogue) and is closely related to Cylinder and Cypress. Another purchase of interest to Taranaki was one made by Smith Bros., Mangaweka, who have their horses trained at Hawera. They secured for 675 guineas a bay colt by Posterity from that wonderful brood mare Eulogy. He is thus a half-brother to Praise, Commendation, Epitaph, Humbug, Eulalie, Motley and Arisus, besides being closely related to Tea Trader, Honour, Lysander, Episode and a host of other firstclass performers. This has been easily the most successful strain racing in New Zealand in recent years and it will not be surprising if the Posterity colt becomes really good. Eulogy is. English bred by Cicero out of Kelibia by Upas out of Goletta by Galopin out of Biserta by Lord Lyon. A big change has been made in J. Fryer’s team, four having been turned out and three others brought in. Unsound. Hopes were, entertained that Green

Linnet might recover sufficiently to stand a preparation but she shows little signs of becoming all right for a long time and she will not be persevered with. His pair of hurdlers, March Alone and Singer, both' broke down last week. Blood poisoning set in on March Alone’s enlarged leg, passing also to his other hind leg, which filled io a great size. He was treated by a veterinary surgeon Who expressed the opinion that it would be at least a year before the Australianbred gelding was able to race again.. Singer also broke down badlyn the trouble being located in the same place in which he was affected' before. It is practically certain that he will not be placed in work again. As March Alone is only a young horse and a born stayer there seemed every possibility of his making good eventually. Singer, however, is at an age at which little could be expected of him, although he may have picked up a. stake or two around the smaller meetings. Haunui also went amiss, his knee which has been troubling, him for some time finally giving out, and he is now very lame. Haunui ran well enough ..at New Plymouth and Stratford to suggest that had he not been unsound he . would haye paid his way. Prospective Jumpers. Fryer brought back from Wellington two prospective jumpers in Stanchion and a Surveyor gelding owned by J. J. Corry, Blenheim. Now eight years old, Stanchion. (Limond—Termination) has only to take kindly to jumping to make good at the game, for his victory in the Wellington Cup and other open middledistance handicaps points to his having considerably more pace than the average hurdler. The Surveyor gelding is six years Of age and out of Rosenor, thus being a full brother to Make Up, whom he somewhat resembles. He is not a very big horse but is reported to be a splendid jumper. Both he and Stanchion are well for- ' ward, having been in work for some time, so they will be ready to race very soon. Copey is the other to be taken in hand by Fryer and he will immediately commence his preparation for steeplechase events in the whiter. He is looking in great heart at present, having done a fair amount of road work lately. For the Egmont Races. The first visitor , to arrive at Hawera for the meeting next week was Blue Boy (Gainscourt—Polonaise) and not Cawbeen as stated in yesterday mom- ' ing’s paper. Blue Boy is owned and trained by E. Grenside, Hastings. He was a winner at *the Napier Park meeting’ last month.and has been in a place on several occasions lately. C. Le Campion, owner-trainer of St. Clara, is dissatisfied with the weights allotted his mare in the Nolan Cup and Waipapa hack' events, and consequently is unlikely to start her at the meeting. Considering that she has won only one race to date the handicapper certainly has not taken any risks with the Grandcourt mare. TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB. ‘ AN ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME. The programme of the Te Aroha Jockey Club is published to-day. When “hard times” came this club adopted the courageous policy of keeping its stakes up and owners, trainers and the public supported it so solidly that It came through the test with flying colours. The Te Aroha meeting is now established as

one of the leading gatherings- in the . North Island outside .the two big mfttro. politan clubs,-and, horses come.from all over the island to battle for the: fine stakes -provided.- ■ . Taranaki owners and trainers have always patronised, the gathering, end/with the opening of the Stratford-Main- Trinik railway the patronage should again.in-* crease this year. The present programme is a particularly attractive one. The Herries . Memorial Hack again carries a stake of £5OO inclusive of a-cup to the’ value of £5O, and a trophy in the shape, of a silver tea and coffee service to the value of £2O has been added to the stake for the Champion Hack event this year. No race on the programme, carries a lesser stake than £l5O. • < "’ Nominations for all events close with the secretary, Te Aroha, at 5-’ p.nto on-_ ■ Friday, February 9.
