TOUR OF PRIME MINISTER

SOUTH ISLAND CENTRES VISITED. BETTER FINANCIAL YEAR LIKELY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, Jan. 25. Enthusiastic welcomes were accorded to the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon G. W. Forbes) at several centres in the Awarua electorate yesterday. At each town visited large numbers of citizens gathered to meet the Prime Minister, this being in keeping with the receptions which he has received at every centre at which he has stopped during his week’s visit to Central Otago and Southland. Over 200 people assembled at Bluff to hear the Prime Minister speak for ten minutes, while at Winton he was given a complimentary luncheon by the local bodies of the districts. Later in the day he visited the annual sports gathering at Brown’s, where he briefly addressed over 1000 people. Mr. Forbes was exceptionally interested in the sawing and chopping events and spent some time with the competitors. He was entertained at a gathering, representative of Southland, organised by the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce. Replying to the toast of his health, Mr. Forbes said the position to-day generally should inspire confidence. The rise in the prices of wool, he had been informed, would remain for at least two years, and the meat industry was also favourably placed. New Zealand should be confident and he was sure that financially the year would be easier than any since the onset of the depression.
