MOKAU DISTRICT NEWS
CONCERT AND DANCE ENJOYED.
A pleasant entertainment in the Mokau hall on Saturday night was the concert c and dance arranged by the Mokau-Awa-kino branch of the Women’s Division. An excellent concert programme was enjoyed until half past ten, when supper was served by the ladies, after which there was dancing to music supplied by Mrs. N. Taylor and Miss I. Hansen. Visitors were present from all the surrounding districts, including two parties from New Plymouth and Te Kuiti. Concert items were: Pianoforte solo, Miss Lynne Fredric; poi dances, Mokau Maori children; solo, Mrs. Townley; recitation, Master C. Mitu; action song, schoolchildren; solo, Mrs. Hamblyn; violin and ’cello duet, Misses J. and M. Fredric; solo, Mr. Fredrjc; pianoforte solo, Miss Dolly Piko; canoe poi, Maori' girls; part songs, schoolchildren song and dance; Misses K. Condon, J. Powell and L. Somerville; solo, Mr. Cleland; club swinging, Mrs. Vezey; pianoforte duet, Misses B. Sampson and I. Hansen; solo, Mrs. Widt; quartet, Maori boys; pianoforte solo, Mr. Fredric; solo,. Miss M. Ormand; duet, Misses N. Hammon and L. Somerville; solo, Mr. Northern; hula, Miss Polly Taitoko; solo, Miss Gertie Piko; minuet, Misses M. Condon, L. Gough, J, Powell and L. Somerville; solo, Mr. A. Ericksen; part song, Misses I. Hansen, I. McCrae, M. Rattenbury, M. Ormand, M. Condon and L. Somerville.
Accompaniments were played by Mr. and Mrs. Fredric, Mrs. E. L. Black, Misses E. O’Sullivan and Miss I. Hansen. Mr. A. Ericksen was master of ceremonies. Sharks Caught.
Fishing from the “Tu Kua" last week, Mr. Frank Rattenbury caught several sharks, including a blue shark and. a mako shark. A 10ft 6in grey nurse shark was caught. The mako was only a small fish about sft 6in. It Is unusual for this species of shark to be found so far south as these waters. A stingaree, approximately 6ft across, was also seen on the Mokau bar.
Personal Items. Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Fredric and family, New Plymouth, were the guests of Mrs. E. L. Black, Mokau, for the week-end. Mrs. E. Lewis has returned from a visit to Tauranga. Mr. and Mrs. P. Lake have left Mokau to reside at Awakino. Miss H. Cartwright has returned to her home at Mokau River. Miss M. Condon has returned home after spending a week at Mokau. Mr. F. Cleland, New Plymouth, was a visitor to Mokau for the week-end. Mr. H. Gilligan is visiting his home at Whangarei. Mr. H. Jones, Mokau River, has been successful in obtaining his underwriter’s certificate.
