HOLIDAYS BEGIN AT HAWERA.

CEREMONIES AT LOCAL SCHOOLS.

Hawera primary schools closed for the holidays yesterday and “parents' afternoons” were held to mark the occasion. At the Hawera Main School Miss E. Terry, infant mistress for the past eight years, was farewelled. Miss Terry, who has been granted 12 months leave of absence, will visit England, Canada and the near East, prior to taking up a position at the Central School, New Plymouth. Dr. W. M. Thomson made a presentation to Miss Terry on behalf of the committee, and Mervyn LCece presented her with a bouquet from the children. Proficiency and competency certificates were presented by the headmaster, Mr. J. W. Thomas, in the morning and in the afternoon the Mayor (Mr. J. E. Campbell) presented other awards. DIXON BANNER TO TAWHITL At the Tawhiti school, Nolantown, Mr. E. J. Dixon presented the Dixon Banner to the school, the Hawera Star essay shield was presented and Isobel Cruickshank was presented with a seven years' attendance certificate. The following swimming ■ certificates were presented: 50 yards (learners), George Pearce, Ena Epae, Richard Dick, Ngaire Crabb, Milton Robinson, Mervyn Staples, Hazel Brogden, Nancy Brooks, Zoe Castles; 100 yards, Eileen Dowden; 220 yards, Madge Owen, Dorothy Gould, Joyce Dick, Lucy Hannah," Neil Forbes; 300 yards, Kawa Hanatawa; 350 yards, Ruby Toy; 400 yards, Joan, Brooks; 450 yards,’ Gloria Sloan; 600 yards, Lucy Hannah; 650 yards, Hazel Johns; 880 yards, Fay Walker; 900 yards, Kathleen Dick, Winnie Panenui, Eileen Governor, Betty Sloan, Lily Brogden; 1000 yards, Madge Owen, Neil Forbes; 1760 yards, Jocelyn Pearce, Daphne Kelsen. Other pupils to receive awards were Nola Brogden, who received the Corrigan Challenge Cup for the champion vegetable plot and a replica to possess; Peter Gould, who received the Hodder and Tolley Challenge Cup for the champion calf in heavy breeds and a replica to possess, also medals for first in .the group for dairy, type and first in the group for condition; and Charles Toy, who received the medal for second in the group for condition. Afternoon tea was served by the senior girls with the assistance of a ladies’ committee. BREAK-UP AT TURUTURU. Several parents attended the break-ing-up of the Turuturu school yesterday when a concert was given by the pupils. Mr. C. H. Bowman briefly addressed the children. Presentations were made by the children of the school to Mr. F. W. Mason, headmaster, of a pedestal ashtray, and to Mrs. Mason of a crystal vase. Little Zoe Lippingwell presented Mrs. Mason with a bouquet. The adults had tea and there were sweets and soft drinks for the children. The following awards were made:-r Attendance: Charles Richards, Lilah Webber, Rex Lyons, James Kearns, Amelia Radford, Nancy lan Hancock, George Richards, Ronald Greenbank, Albert Smith, Norma Barkla, Thelma Beale, Don Johnston, Jill Walden. Moyston Radford, who was second in the group calf-rearing competition., was presented with a medal. Pupils in swimming during the season, who have already received certificates, are: One mile, Whoki McCallum; 440 yards, Margaret Crawford and Horace Prime; 220 yards, Kathleen Douglas and Josephine James; ; 50 yards, Roy Schmidt, Verna Radford, Amelia Radford, Olive Beale, Elsie Summers, Sylvia Spratt, Beryl Chadwick and Alan Lay. NORMANBY FUNCTION . At Normanby a pleasant little function took place in the morning. Mr. A. Galloway, chairman of the committee, congratulated the children on their successful year. Lester Jurd had established a very fine record in gaining the attendance certificate for the fifth year in succession, he said. Eileen Harrison had gained an excellent percentage in the Red Cross examinations, and Gwen Nicholson had made an exceptionally splendid record in the calf-rearing club. Roger Minhirmick also deserved special mention for gaining a high percentage at the proficiency examinations. He was believed to be the school’s first Maori scholar to gain proficiency. The following certificates were present-ed-—Good attendance: Primer 2, Arthur Duggan; Primer 3, Betty Duggan, Gladys Duggan and Lloyd Webber; Standard 1, Frances Smith, John Henderson and Arthur Hughes; Standard 2, Lena Jurd, Elizabeth Walden; Standard 3, Elaine Kennedy, Victor Evans; Form 1, Nancy Frei, Doris Glentworth, Frank Gane. Ivan Kennedy, Fred Evans; Form 2, Eileen Harrison, Daisy Glentworth, Edmond Taylor, Ivan Cadman. Eileen Harrison Received a special prize from Sister Small for Red Cross work.
