PATEA TONNAGE RECORDS

5192 TONS OF PRODUCE SHIPPED.

PROGRESS OF LOAN CONVERSION.

Record tonnage amounting to 5192 tons was shipped through the port of Patea. during November last, according to the official figures tabled at yesterday’s meeting of the Harbour Board. The previous record of 4280 was created in January of this year. The export tonnage was 5008, of a value of £301,160, as compared with 2023 of a value of £124,980 in November, 1932. The respective import tonages were 184 and 223.

Two more records were created when the m.v. Hawera carried out 2080 tons on December 15, the largest quantity since she commenced running to Patea, and the m.v. Inaha carried 2670 tons on December 16, her largest load since she had extra machinery installed. An average of a ship a day had passed in and out of the port from December 1 to 19, stated the report of the har-bour-master (Captain W. E. Barnes). The bar had been unworkable for four days. The walls were giving no trouble, there being no leakage through. The dredge operated on four days, removing 12 loads of spoil from the berths. The pilot station was being painted, and general work in the reserves had been done. The signal station was in good working order. The chairman reported upon his visit to Wellington in connection with the loan conversion proposals. As the result of his representations he anticipated that the conversion would be satisfactorily carried out. If so, all the liabilities of the board would be extinguished by the end of 1952. From 1935 the conversion would save the board £lOOO per anum, and the - sinking fund payment would be practically the same. It was left to the chairman to finalise the matter. ' ' '

It was decided to forward letters of appreciation to the Treasury Departmem and the Minister of Finance (Rt Hon. J. G. Coates) for their assistance in connection with the conversion proposals. There were present Messrs. A. T. Christensen (chairman), W. Back, A. Pearce, W. H. Watkins and W. H. Southcombe.
