Footpath Lighting. Trial of footpath lighting at Stratford has been delayed owing to the difficulty of procuring suitable globes at a reasonable price, but the electricity committee reported to the borough council last night that samples were ' expected and that when they arrived an experiment would be conducted on the verandah of the Municipal Building.

Council and East Committee. Acting on the recommendation of the works committee, the Stratford Borough Council accepted last night as satisfactory the explanation of the east committee of the Egmont National Park Board regarding the sale of firewood. It had been alleged that the committee was using unemployed at relief rates of pay to cut the wood and was therefore competing unfairly with private firewood suppliers. The committee explained that relief workers were employed not on relief rates but on contract' Stone Thrown at J.P.

While driving in his trap on November 30 Nicholas Benjamin Fryday, J.P., Ngaere, was struck on the head by a stone. He turned and saw a boy running away. R. Evans was ordered to pay Taranaki Chain Stores £1 lis lOd forthwith (costs £1 Is) in default three days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended for a month. Claude Henry Young was ordered to pay D. Steven £ll Ils forthwith, in default seven days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended on payment of £l 10s a month, the first payment to be made within a month. Country Cricket.

Sixteen runs was the margin by which Waipuku defeated Ratapiko in a weekend cricket match. Waipuku made 59 with A. Thompson junr. (21) and A. Thompson, senr. (13) the best scorers. Ratapiko could compile only 43, the only batsman to make double figures being V. Dravitski (12). Honan played havoc with Ratapiko’s batsmen, taking five wickets for 5 runs. L. Dravitski was the most useful bowler Ratapiko had. Tenders for Firewood.

The annual Stratford primary school picnic was discussed at the meeting of the committee last night and it was decided to hold, the gathering on February 15 at Ngamotu beach. The matter of making arrangements was held over until the next" meeting. Friendly Cricket Game.

The staffs of the Stratford and Hawera post offices played a cricket match at Stratford during the week-end. Strafford won by 86 runs over two innings. Stratford made 92 in the first innings, Burgess (28) and Francis (27), and 101 in the second, Faulkner (43 retired). Hawera made 37 and 70, Little (25 not out). The Stratford bowling was very severe in Hawera’s first innings, when Jones took five wickets for 15 runs and Francis four for 12. Francis took five for 24 in Hawera’s second innings. The Hawera bowling was much more effective during Stratford's first innings, when Hunter took three wickets and Little five.
