FINE FINISHES WITNESSED.
CYCLING AND RUNNING EVENTS.
. The New Plymouth Cycle and‘ Athletic League held, another successful evening sports meeting at Western Park last night. Fair fields contested the events and some interesting, finishes were witnessed. The following officials were on duty: Starter, Mr. D. George; referee and handicapper, Mr. L..E. Smith; judges, Messrs. F. E. Orbell, G. M. Beer and R. Browne; track steward, Mr. L. Claffey; : number steward, Mr. A. Gable; secretary,. Mr. H. W, Bocock. . ...The results, were;— • .100 yards running handicap: C. Fox (syds), i, G. SoIe.GLO) 2, G. Tuffery (IQ) 3. . Also started; N. Gordon (10) and D. Stafford (12). Time, 10 l-ss. B grade three-quarter mile cycle handicap: R. Goodin (30yds) 1, A, E. Wood (60) 2, C. Pulford..(6o) 3. Also started: W., Ireland (60), N. Walker (100) and N. Knight (100). No time taken. With one and a-Half "laps gone the 'field was bunched, and in the last lap Goodin took the. lead -and passed the judges half a length ahead of Wood with Pulford close up third, just ahead of Ireland and Walker.
A grade three-quarter mile cycle handicap: C. Lehrke (40yds) 1, C. Burke (scr) 2, C. Parker (scr) 3. Also started: G. Plucke (70yds), H. Eva (70) and T. Smith (90). Eva, Smith and Plucke were the early pacemakers and were soon caught by Lehrke. With a lap to go Parker and Burke were up but in the sprint for the judges Lehrke finished best to beat Burke by half a length, with Parker a similar distance behind and Plucke close up fourth... 220 yards open running: D. Stafford (50yds) I,C. Fox (15) 2, N. Gordon (40) 3. Time, 20 4-ss. Stafford off the limit finished gamely to beat Fox by a yard, with Gordon two yards away third. A grade two mile cycle: G. Plucke (200yds) 1, C. Burke (scr) 2. The only finishers. Time, 5m 20 l-ss. Also started: C. Lehrke (100yds) and C. Parker (scr)., Plucke off the , limit mark was never headed and rode a game unpaced race to beat Burke by the length of the straight. Parker and Lehrke both retired in the last lap. B grade pursuit race: W- Ireland and R. Goodin dead-heat 1, -C. Pulford 3. This was an unpaced race, competitors racing against the clock and the rider covering the greater distance at a given time was adjudged the winner. Ireland and Goodin both passed their starting points on terms but Pulford had lost several yards on the winners, and Knight, Woods and Walker all having been overtaken were called. off during the race. 440. yards open running: C. Fox (35yds) 1. N. Gordon (60) 2. Time, 525. Gordan led into the straight but Fox finished best to win by two yards. Tuffery and Stafford, the only other starters, retired.
, No races will be run on Monday next (Christmas Day) or the following week (New Year’s Day) but the evening meetings will commence again on January 8, when a series of A and B grade cycle races as well as running events will be commenced. The races will be run every Monday evening commencing at 6.30 p.m. and nominations close the Friday evening prior to each meeting.
