DISCIPLE OF GANDHI
WOMAN’S ERRANT COURSE. ARRESTED IN CALCUTTA. London, Dec. 6 A wayward American disciple of Gandhi, whose alleged worldliness caused her to be expelled from Gandhi’s “ashram” (retreat), caused a fresh hubbub to-day in Calcutta. At one time she stood-" second only to her fellow white woman, Miss Slade, in the estimation of Gandhi. Recently she astonished India with a confession of misdeeds, but after she was forgiven, she returned to the retreat at Ahamedabad. A few days ago she appeared at Delhi’s best hotel, Where she said she was Janet Gaynor, the cinema star, and declared she had been robbed of a thousand pounds sterling. To-day she arrived at Calcutta by train, having discarded her saree for a coat and skirt. Sh“ declared she was travelling without a ticket, as she had no money. The police called and she was served with a summons, which she tore up, and asked to see the American Consul. He refused to have anything to do with her, and she is now detained under police surviellance. >
