TAKAPUNA OPENS TO-DAY

GREAT FIELD FOR PLATE, MASTER NORVAL’S PROSPECTS. - BAMBURY WILL.BE FANCIED. (By “Hurry On.”) The Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring meeting will open to-day. As is usual with meetings in the Auckland province, splendid fields will contest all the events. The Takapuna Plate has drawn all the best hacks in the north and should result in a great contest. The racing will commence with the MELROSE MAIDEN. Of £lOO. Six furlongs.

Alignment was unfortunate .to run into Boughal at Te Rapa, and though there is not likely to be anything of that calibre in this field, he.has a solid weight. Pelagia is improving with every 'race, while Morehu. Sir ■ Willonyx . and Tondelayo have all been galloping well. Alignment, Pelagia, and Morehu will probably be best fancied. SPRING HANDICAP. . . Of £l2O. Five, furlongs and a-half. (Race starts at 12.42 p.m.) .Paganelli 9' 2 ' Quietly 7 0 Greek Gold 9 0 Princess Stat 7 0 Bambury 813 . Landlubber < 7 0 British Golden Sceptre ,70 Columbia 8 G Arawa Rose 7 0 Hampton Park 7 5- • Gold Munir- 7.0 Bambury is expected to be favourite. Having his. first race for seven months, he showed wonderful pace at Te Rapa, and round the turning course at Takapuna his great brilliance is stfre to have the others in trouble < before the finish. Possibly hard ones for him to beat may be British Columbia and Hampton Park, both of whom are smart .out of the tapes. PONUI HACK ■. Of. £llO., Njne furlongs. (Race starts at 1.26 p.m.) . Cape Fair 9 7 Royal Gallant 8 0 Versant 8 11 United 7 11 Psychologist 810 • Expectancy 7 .11 Tavern Knight 8 10 Hawthorn 7 10 Gigantic ”' 8 S' Roman Mascot 7 '4, Sunny Wee Mask 7 .0 Bachelor .8 .6 • Caliente. 7 0 Cape Fair has been racing consistently in the north and should "go well';here, despite her weight. Psychologist : and Tavern Knight have both . been doing good work on the tracks, while the Gisborne representative, Sunny Bachelor, has created a favourable impression. Expectancy was a winner at Ellerslie who has improved since then. Gay Broney, United and Hawthorn are, possibilities. The favourites may be Sunny Bachelor, Tavern Knight and Expectancy. ALISON CUP. Of £3OO. One, mile, 3 , furlongs, 40 yards.

Though Baroscope will strip a fitter horse than he did at Te Rapa, he does not appeal' as much as Speedmint, who was a good third in the Waikato Cup. Merry Damon was a. winner at the last Gisborne meeting and he has ran some good races 'on the Takapuna course. Master Norval won the Waikato Cup like a good one and he should go very well to-day. He is a good beginner and can stay. Alloy, is always entitled to respect, and both Maori Boy and Eager Rose are partial to the track. Jonathan and Mungatoon are a likely pair. The former has proved his ability to stay, while the latter has been ing in great style at Te Aroha. Palm Queen will have friends. She is a good stayer, and aided by her feather weight should make a bold showing. This will be a. great betting race, but the most favoured will probably be Master Norval, Palm Queen and Speedmint. CAMBRIA HANDICAP. : Of £ll5. Two-year-olds.- Five furlongs. (Race starts at 2.55 p.m.)

High Crest’s good second to Keith Lu at Te Rapa draws attention to her, chances here, especially as the Surveyor filly has done well in the interval. Gay Blonde and Nun Nicer have been galloping in great style at Takanini, while Wahroonga, Seven Seas and Red Flame should all show up. Most support may come for High Crest, Gay Blonde and Nun Nicer. TAKAPUNA PLATE. Of £4OO. Seven furlongs. (Race starts at 3.44 p.m.)

sity for two divisions. Among the older horses Kiltowyn has the best credentials, and he has been putting up wonderful trials at Ellerslie. Boughal’s efforts at Te Rapa were impressive, while, if started here, both Jonathan and British Columbia would be entitled to respect. Ruri is another who is well above the ordinary. The three-year-olds haye an advantage in the weights and among those of that age are Star Artist, Tavern Knight,' D’Artagnan, Cherry King and Rereatu. All have won races this season except Rereatu, but his great gallops at Takanini during the week point to him running prominently. Speculation will take a wide range, but the favourites are likely to be Kiltowyn, Star Artist and Rereatu. TIRI HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Of £lOO. Nine furlongs. (Race starts at 4.27 p.m.)

Alpinus has a big load but he can carry weight and he has done all that has been asked of him in good style since winning a double - at Whangarei. Chock Say showed a glimpse of form at Levin. Snow Prince is a little too close to Alpinus. Free Air, has pace but Courthaven makes more appeal; she is at her best in events of this type. Gainful and Eldora have fair chances, but Alpinus, Courthaven and Chock Say may make most appeal to backers. CHELTENHAM HANDICAP. Of £165. Six furlongs.

This is a weak flying field. Paganelli on his favourite track would only have to be fit and well to make a bold showing. Prolyxo is handily weighted. King Ford showed at Paefoa that he is not yet a back number. Whakapara, Hampton Park and Limex will have friends, but the public will probably back Paganelli, King Ford and Prolyxo.
