JUDGING IN WAVERLEY GROUP. WANGANUI DISTRICT COMPETITION. . .. . " I ' Judging of entries' in . the Boys and Girls’ Calf Clubs in the. Wanganui district was continued on Thursday, group 5 (Waverley, Waitotara and Ngutuwera) being .dealt with.' Mr. J. Masters (St. John’s, Wanganui) judged the type and Mr. T. W. Lonsdale the rearing of the calves. Mr. J. B. Hogg accompanied the judges as a representative of the Education Department. Schools are divided into various groups and the calves which are placed, first, second and third in each group, together with those junior calves which the judges consider suitable, become eligible to compete in the championship at the . Marton Agricultural and Pastoral Show in February. Mr. Alex Stuart, M.P., has donated a silver cup for the prizewinner at the show and Messrs. Horrocks, Upokongaro, have donated a pedigree Jersey bull. The child who wins the championship at Marton will be permitted to choose this animal from Messrs. Horrocks’ bull calves on the farm. In making the donation on Friday Mr. A. Horrocks said that the scheme was a splendid one and in view of the fact that the competitors learned a great deal about calves from it, whoever won the championship would be competent to pick the bull without aid. Placings in the Waverley-Waitotar-Ngutwera group were:— Lawrence Hooper (Ngutwera) 90pts L Joyoe Luke (Waverley) 89pts 2. S. Holloway (Waitotara) 86pts. 3. Eight calves were brought forward in the senior class at Waverley. Two juniors, two yearlings and two two-year-olds were also paraded. Placings were as follows:— Seniors: Joyce Luke 89pts 1, Shirley Johnson 84pts 2, M. Stewart 82pts 3, A. Middleton 81, Joyce Stewart 80, C. Lupton 80, Tom Hickford 76, J. Birdson 75. Juniors: Matilia Wall 65pts 1, Ted Boyd 61pts 2. Yearlings: Jessie Macadams 1, Joyce Luke 2. Two-year-olds: R. Stewart 1, S. Johnson 2. Joyce Luke’s calf, being second in the group would be eligible for Marton and in the opinion of the judges Matilda Wall’s calf should also be shown. The senior parade at Ngutwera totalled four, with two juniors, and the most outstanding calf of the group was found here. Placings were:— Senior: Lawrence Hooper 90pts 1, f. Hooper 83pts 2, R. Downs 82pts 3, G. Trudgeon 81. Juniors: Rex Muldrock 59pts 1, Alex Trudgeon 57pts 2. The placings at Waitotara were: S. Holloway 86pts 1, F. Clifton 85pts 2, R. Hurley 82pts 3, C. Clifton 82, B. Watson 7J. • Pet lambs: D. Blackie 1, N. Fitzgerald 2, E. Sandi 3. At Waverley the judges commented on the fact that the children were in no way losing interest in the movement and were bringing their calves forward year after year. Special mention was made of the fact that the calf exhibited by Shirley Johnson was a daughter of the calf she had firs 1 exhibited. _ Altogether the entries were splendid and if no better than any other seen in the district were at least quite as good. Mr. Boyne on behalf of the committee thanked the judges and officials for the trouble they had taken. The visitors were then entertained at tea .by the j committee members and their wives.
